Bring your calculator, ruler, and pencils/pens, and Stony Brook ID. NO Palm or Pocket PC devices, and NO TELEPHONES ALLOWED. Calculators may NOT be shared between students. Make sure your calculator has enough power to last the exam! No notes can be brought to class, and books must stay in the (back)pack.
The necessary formulae will be provided with the exam, see above. Typically, the exam will contain 3-5 word problems (8-10 for the Final Exam), with several sub-problems each. The problems will be derived from and similar to previously assigned homework problems (including the WEB-HW). Some questions that probe wider understanding may also be included. Alternatively, the exam may take the form of a multiple-choice test, with points added for correct answers, and subtracted for wrong choices.
Where possible, partial credit will be given. Each word problem will count for 20-60 points. Points will be taken off for errors in (or absence of) units, vector signs, significant digits, etc..
Grading will NOT be on a curve, with A(80%<Grade<100%), A- (75%<Grade<80%), B+ (70%<Grade<75%), B (65%<Grade<70%), B- (60%<Grade<65%), C+ (55%<Grade<60%), C (50%<Grade<55%), C- (45%<Grade<50%), D+ (40%<Grade<45%), D (35%<Grade<40%), F (Grade<35%).
Cheating, as everywhere else in this University, will be brought before the Academic Judiciary, without exceptions. Students found to be cheating will fail the exam and thus the course.
No excuses except VALID and DOCUMENTED (MEDICAL) EXCUSES will be accepted in lieu of taking the exam. The instructor will decide if an immediate make-up exam will be given in such circumstances.
